Why is Water Pipe Now Plastic?

Traditionally, water pipes were made of galvanized steel and then eventually replaced with copper pipes, due to the fact they were less susceptible to corrosion. Nowadays, however, you may find that the majority of water pipes are actually made from PVC, or plastic.

Plastic has been used as it provides a whole host of benefits as a modern material that traditional pipes could not achieve.

Why is plastic more suitable?

PVC pipes most frequently made from MDPE (medium-density polyethylene). This material is both lightweight yet strong, an ideal combination for easy install but long lasting use. MDPE pipes will resist corrosion and damage from being buried underground or be affected by debris and stones from moving soil.

Plastic pipes will also make water flow quieter, even in times of high pressure and speed, as they’re more flexible. This also makes installation a breeze as the pipes can be bent without the risk of breakage.

Certain other pipes are not as suitable for supplying water from the mains due to their susceptibility to cracks and shocks. This leads to water wastage and can increase your bills. MDPE pipes do not shock or crack under pressure, making them the ideal solution to last for decades without the need for replacement.

A further benefit of MDPE pipes is their resistance to bacteria and chemicals. Plastic pipe does not react with compounds in the water such as lead and sulphur, and they are manufactured with a smooth bore that prevents the accumulation of bacteria and fungi on the pipe surface.

MDPE pipes are also less expensive and don’t freeze as easily, as well as not requiring a flame to install.
