Membranes

Membranes are versatile sheets installed underground to create a strong foundation for various landscaping projects. They offer a range of benefits and can be employed in numerous applications, including:

  • Drainage: Drainage membranes facilitate efficient water drainage, preventing issues like waterlogging.
  • Engineering: Driveway membranes provide stability and reinforcement for structures like driveways and pathways.
  • Landscaping: Weed control membranes help create a clean and well-maintained landscape by suppressing weed growth.

What Are The Different Types Of Membranes?

  • Geotextile Membranes: Crafted from durable polypropylene or polyester, these membranes are ideal for applications like soakaway crate systems. They effectively prevent silt and debris from entering the system while promoting soil and aggregate layer stabilisation.
  • Damp Proof Membranes: Composed of recycled polyethylene, these membranes are typically used within buildings to create a moisture barrier, safeguarding the interior from dampness.
  • Impermeable Membranes: Designed for attenuation applications, they ensure water retention within an attenuation tank, preventing infiltration into the surrounding soil.
  • Weed Control Membranes: Designed to maintain a pristine and well-kept landscape by preventing unwanted weed growth
  • Terram Membranes: The permeable design allows water and nutrients through while blocking unwanted plant growth

What Is The Best Membrane To Use Under Gravel?

To maintain the stability of your gravel, a high-quality geotextile membrane is recommended between the soil and gravel layers. This allows for proper water drainage while keeping the gravel firmly in place, regardless of traffic. Additionally, gravel membrane acts as a weed barrier, promoting a neat and tidy aesthetic in your outdoor space.

How To Lay Membrane For Gravel

  1. Preparation: Clear the designated area. For enhanced weed control, consider applying a pre-emptive weed killer to the soil.
  2. Membrane Placement: Unfurl the membrane across the prepared surface, ensuring a minimum 300mm overlap at all joints and edges.
  3. Gravel Layering: Apply the gravel. We recommend at least 50mm depth for paths or driveways with frequent foot traffic. Use a rake to achieve an even distribution.

How To Stop Weeds Growing Through Membrane

High-quality weed control membranes effectively prevent weed growth. However, if occasional weeds appear, these methods can be used for eradication:

  • Boiling Water: Apply boiling water directly to the weeds for a quick and effective solution.
  • Saltwater Solution: For larger areas, create a mixture of 1 part salt to 3 parts water and apply it to the affected areas.

Please Note: Exercise caution when using saltwater near desirable plants, as it can harm surrounding vegetation.

Does Weed Membrane Let Water Through?

Yes, weed-proof membranes are designed to be permeable, allowing nutrients and water to pass through while suppressing weed growth. They work well to keep weeds down, even persistent ones, and help prevent waterlogging by letting rainwater drain through to the soil underneath
