Recessed Manhole Covers - External

Recessed Manhole Covers are designed to accommodate various surface materials like concrete, paving stones, tiles, or asphalt within the cover itself.

This helps enable Block Paving, Slabs or Screed to be laid within a metal tray to give access to the drainage system whilst blending in seamlessly with the surrounding materials.

Clark-Drain are one of the UK market leaders in the supply of manhole covers, and are probably the best known name in the industry. We have partnered them as supplier since we began trading many years ago.

This partnership has resulted in us being able to supply a wide range of manhole covers. With weight loading options from 3.5 tonne to 10 tonne, and sizes starting at 300mm all the way up to 600mm, you’re sure to find the ideal manhole cover for your access and inspection needs.

External recessed manhole covers are ideal for parks, plazas and other developments where aesthetics are paramount to the finished project result.

We also offer a range of recessed covers for internal use.

Recessed manhole covers are a relatively modern invention. Using a simple lift-out tray concept, they enable modern inspection chambers or old manholes to be accessed from within a patio, driveway or garden area without the need for an unsightly steel or cast iron cover that stands out from the surrounding finish like a sore thumb.

Block paving, patio slabs, concrete or tarmac is laid within the recessed tray, matching the material finish all around the cover. Paving slabs and block paviors are aligned so that the sand or mortar lines line up exactly with the adjacent products, making the recessed cover almost invisible.

Most recessed covers feature integral lifting keys to avoid the need to disturb the infill. A variety of weight loading options and a wide range of sizes are available from our stock.

How to lift a recessed manhole cover

To lift a manhole cover with integral lifting keys, you should follow these steps:

  1. Remove the dust cap – this is usually marked ‘KEY UNDER CAP’. You can do this by prising the cover from both ends.
  2. Lift out the key using the recessed finger slots located halfway along each side. Make sure you raise the key vertically.
  3. Grasp the keys (and gently lift the lid, making sure you use all the keys that are fitted to the cover (some manhole covers have two, but often four!).
