Grease Traps

Grease traps, also known as grease interceptors or grease separators, are devices designed to capture fats, oils, and grease (FOG) from wastewater before they enter the municipal sewer system. These substances, if not intercepted, can solidify and cause blockages in sewer lines, leading to costly repairs and potential environmental hazards.

For a civil drainage engineer, commercial grease traps are crucial in maintaining the integrity and efficiency of underground drainage systems. They help prevent FOG buildup in pipes, which can cause significant disruptions in wastewater flow. Grease traps mitigate the risk of sewer overflows and backups by capturing grease and oils, greatly reducing the risk of sanitation issues and property damage.

Additionally, grease traps reduce the burden on sewage treatment plants, ensuring that they operate more effectively and with lower maintenance costs. Once the trap has eliminated these undesirable substances from the wastewater, it can continue on to the drainage or sewage system.

In the design and management of urban drainage systems, incorporating commercial grease traps is a proactive measure to enhance system reliability and longevity.

They are particularly important in areas with high concentrations of food service establishments, which generate substantial amounts of grease, to the point where they're now a requirement in drainage systems serving kitchens. In this instance, commercial hot food premises should be fitted with a grease separator complying with BS EN 1825-1:2004 and designed in accordance with BS EN 1825-2:2002 or other effective means of grease removal.

By implementing grease traps, civil drainage engineers can ensure compliance with environmental regulations, promote public health, and contribute to the sustainable management of urban water resources.

Our grease traps are manufactured by Turtle Enviro and are available in both from 136 to 465 litre options online, with other options obtainable on request. Modern grease traps are becoming more of a key part of kitchen and restaurants' underground drainage systems due to their effectiveness and the issues they prevent. Designed to comply with the BS EN 1825 specification, these grease traps are supplied with a 3.5 Tonne loading lid, making them suitable for driveways and small car parks.
