DuraDek Installation Guide

The DuraDek decking systems are quick and easy to install and with the use of color-coded edging and trims for a great looking finish.

Before you start

For best results, upon receipt of products, allow DuraDek to acclimatise for a minimum of 3 days, raised 100mm off the ground ensuring that it is kept flat and dry.

DuraDek recommends that installation conditions are stable and flat to avoid any possibility of the decking surface deforming over time.

Preparing the Area

Joists should be laid on a flat surface such as concrete. Uneven surfaces such as grass or sand will cause movement which will damage the installation.

It is recommended that joists should not be fixed directly to foundations. Joist centres are no greater than 300mm, except when being fitted on a diagonal where it is recommended that joist centres are 250mm - work from the centre out.

If installing above ground level you should consult with an engineer.

It is recommended that a channel is included in the foundations to allow for drainage. Channels should be included every 600 - 800mm.

Installation

A drainage slope along the length of the board of 0.5% or 5mm per metre to ensure sufficient rainwater run-off.

Boards should be installed with a 6mm gap between them and must be fitted using DuraDek grab deck clips and stainless steel screws. DuraDek stainless steel starter clips are recommended for securing the first line and the last line of decking boards with a minimum of 12 clips at 300mm centres per 3.6m length.

Double joints should be used under butt joints with one clip either side of the butt joint and an 8mm end to end gap for drainage and expansion. When butt jointed to walls, or other fixed objects a 10mm gap is required.

The use of pedestals is recommended to allow free circulation of air around the installation.

Recommended pedestal spacing is every 400mm (or 10 per 3.6m length) along 61x41mm composite joists. Pedestals adjust from
30mm to 60mm.

Step-by-step

  1. Provide a minimum 10mm gap between edge of decking and any adjacent wall. Allow 8mm gap if deck boards run parallel to wall.
  2. Double joists under butt joints, with one clip each side of the butt joint. Provide a 20mm gap between joists.
  3. Minimum 8mm end-to-end gap between butt jointed boards. This gap is important for drainage and to avoid expansion caused by long term immersion.
  4. DuraDek stainless steel fixing clips provide a secure fit with the recommended 6mm spacing of boards.
  5. DuraDek stainless steel starter clip fixed using 3mm x 25mm stainless steel screws.
  6. 10mm maximum board end overhang from joists.
  7. DuraDek stainless steel fixing clip fixed using 3mm x 25mm stainless steel screws.
