How deep is gas pipe buried?

When following the advice of the Health and Safety Executive in the UK, you should ensure any gas mains are buried with the following depth and cover:

  • 750mm minimum depth of cover in a road or verge
  • 600mm minimum depth of cover in a footpath

Gas service pipes should be buried at the following levels:

  • 375mm minimum depth of cover in private ground
  • 450mm in footpaths and highways

Can gas pipes freeze?

While technically possible, it's highly unlikely that your gas pipes will freeze.

Gas is delivered to homes and commercial buildings extremely pressurised, and due to this, it would take incredibly cold temperatures to cause the pipes to freeze. Incorrect installation or repair are the likely culprits if this does occur, due to water entering the pipes, but standard gas pipes and anything installed correctly won't be subject to this issue.
